7 Secrets of the New Slots
...Because it's not just lemons and cherries anymore!
By Joal Ryan
The one-armed bandit had it coming.
For more than 100 years, the old-fashioned slot machine showed no mercy in gobbling up everything from the change in your wallet to the sense in your head. ("Come on, just one more spin!") It didn't mind if it made your bank account extinct.
So now who are we to care if it's about to lay down with the dinosaurs, its place to be taken on the casino floor by the new high-tech video games?
Not us. True, like their low-tech predecessors, the newbies want to suck your financial resources dry. But unlike manual-labor-required slots, they accomplish their mission with exceeding ease and speed--they even take plastic (not Visa or MasterCard, but casino-issued gaming cards).
And, like any deluded gaming aficionado, we've got a system. Behold the Lucky 7 Secrets of Video Slots:
1. Practice, practice, practice.
We admit: Video slots can be overwhelming. Sometimes, the pay lines--jutting from one corner to the other corner, dipping here, dipping there--look as if they were concocted to prove a geometric theorem.
Before you set foot in Vegas, settle down in front of your computer, fire up the modem and start making those slots sing, baby! Get a feel for them through online gamers such as CasinoTropez.com, the River Belle or Coral Casino. All have dozens of types of slots.
Play for real money, or play for pride and experience (aka, you're too chicken to risk any real dough).
2. Walk the line--the straight line.
How to deal with all those jutting lines, or at least not get a headache? Take it one line at a time.
Most video slots allow you to determine how much a straight line bet is worth--from loose change to several dollars per pop. So, for starters, bet straight lines. Line up three horseshoes (or what-not) in a row and win. Easy, right?
When you're feeling bolder, bet the equivalent of five or even nine straight-line bets on those crazy Pythagorean, crisscross lines. Just don't worry about keeping them straight. This isn't a simple three-line game here. Trust in computers--the machine will do the math.
3. Stay focused.
Stick with one machine. Frankly, this methodology worked on the old slots, too. But it's all the more important in newer slots because there'll come the time when you hear the guy sitting next to you collecting a bucket of ka-ching, ka-ching-ing change.
Remember, though, unless a bell's ringing or a pit boss is looming, he probably hasn't won anything. He's probably just cashing out all the credits he had stored in the machine.
