Tips: Roulette

1. There are only two ways--beyond dumb luck--to beat the wheel. The first is "bias." Once in a great while, a wheel goes out of balance and develops a bias so that some numbers appear more often. To detect this, you'd have to clock hundreds of spins to make sure you weren't just seeing a short run of luck. And if you think you discovered such a wheel, you're probably wrong.

2. Over time, a dealer can get into a rut and throw the ball precisely the same way every spin. If you notice what section of the wheel a dealer releases the ball into, you might gain a slight advantage about guessing which section of the wheel it'll end up in. Since bets are usually allowed for a few seconds while the wheel is spinning, you could hurry and plunk down your chips where you think the ball is going.

3. Roulette plays with its own chips to help differentiate player bets on a crowded table. But never walk away from the table with roulette chips--they are worthless everywhere else in the casino.

4. Never place the five-number bet (0, 00, 1, 2, 3), which pays 6 to 1. It's the only bet on the table that gives the house more than its usual 5.26 percent. Over time, it returns 7.89 percent to the casino.

5. Look for a wheel that offers "surrender"; it will be stated on the rule-and-limit card, posted on or near the table. (Or just ask the dealer.) This stipulates that even-money bettors (such as even or odd, red or black, etc.) that lose to 0 and 00 will only lose half of their wagers when they lose to 0 and 00. So if you're betting red, and a 00 or 0 comes up, the dealer will only claim half of your bet. In effect, this reduces the house advantage on "even money" bets to the European single-zero wheel percentage.

6. On European roulette wheels, the house advantage is only 2.63 percent because they don't include 00.
