The Lucky 13

8. The stats will hit it out of the park during aWorld Series.
With 162 games played, the wheat will have separated from the chaff in the stats. Bet the starting pitcher--his stats are the single most valuable numbers you'll find for the Pennant and World Series. In a five- or seven-game series, batting and fielding numbers tend to have little impact on the outcome.

9. Play favorites in college b-ball.
Bet against the short-sighted masses. March Madness attracts packs of inexperienced gamblers laying lots of money based only on the last game played in the NCAA Tournament. An underdog like a small conference, out-of-nowhere winner will attract a lot of action in its next game, but they tend to lose and lose big--take the favorite and you'll win close to two thirds of the time.

10. Golfing for the 18-hole, head-to-head matchups.
Two players, teeing off together, wrestling for control for 18 holes--it's not just exciting, but it's easier to account for such complicating factors as weather, course-length, fairway grooming and green-size. If the tourney is local, place your bet, buy a ticket and follow your match-up for the afternoon. For majors or more exotic tourneys, follow their rounds on TV or at http://www.pgatour.com/.

11. Look for loose juice.
"Juice" is the percent you pay the sportsbook to place your bet. In most circumstances, you'll lay $110 to make a $100 wager--that's 10 percent juice, universally the rule. But you can find deals. Some sportsbooks, for example, offer 5 percent juice on a given day during the season--often on Tuesday. And, for the most part, you'll find lower juice closer to game time. Thursdays and Fridays are good days to bet hard and cut the juice on the NFL.

12. For big wheels, online cash accounts pay dividends.
Net-based cash accounts such as Neteller and Firepay require an initial deposit and let you bet a certain amount per week, based on that initial deposit. The more you deposit up front, the higher your weekly limit. It will also cost you less if you deposit more up-front--the company will take a smaller percentage for each transaction.

13. Your great grandfather one right idea.
Western Union has just celebrated its 150th anniversary in the money-wire business, and it still offers the lowest transaction fees among reliable companies-including bank wire and money order. For example, it charges 6.8 percent to wire cash to all of Latin America and the Caribbean--the hot spots for offshore sportsbooks. And that rate will buy you the fastest transactions in the business. The Expedited Availability method delivers money over the phone in a matter of hours with a valid credit card or checking account.
