Place Your Bets...
A sport-by-sport rundown of what you can lay your money on
By Kent Andrade
Auto Racing
Both Odds and Money Line bets. Lines are available throughout the whole season (Presidents' Day until Thanksgiving) and Formula 1, the most popular circuits in the world, attract almost all the wagering action, but you can find CART and IRL at some sites. You'll pick the winner of individual races or pick the season-ending champion. You'll also find proposition and futures bets like NASCAR's Rookie of the Year.
Baseball
Plenty of Money Lines and Point Spreads on head-to-head match-ups, plus futures including NL and AL Pennant and World Series champions. Keep your eyes peeled for proposition bets like home-run leaders and over/under pitches by a starter.
Boxing
Usually available three or more months before major bouts, a couple of weeks before minor bouts and contender battles. Bet Odds on the winner or a draw. Proposition bets come in all shapes and sizes: Will a boxer come out of retirement? Will a fight end in a TKO or a knockout? Which round?
Golf
Get Odds or Money Lines for match-ups--two golfers, head-to-head, teeing off together. Futures include holes-in-one, season money-leader, Ryder Cup winners and PGA champ.
Hockey
NHL games are available several days before each match-up with over/under numbers and Money Lines. Futures and props include Stanley Cup winner and Stanley Cup MVP.
Horse Racing
There are nearly a hundred horseracing tracks operating on a daily basis--you can bet on races at the tiniest oval in the kookiest backwater, you can lay your money on the glitziest of races or you can even find some action on the international circuit, with races in Ireland, England and even the Middle East. You can also bet on the greyhounds, and the same rules apply.
To lay a bet, select the track, the race and the horse. For example, you'll be looking to lay a bet along the lines of "Hollywood Park, second race, $10 to win on number 8."
Bets are just like at the track: You can bet on win, place or show, but the combination bets offer fancier payoffs: "exacta," first two horses crossing the wire in exact order; "quinella," first two horses in no particular order; "trifecta," first three finishers in exact order; "trifecta box," first three finishers in any order; "superfecta," first four finishers in exact order.
Finally, there are bets on multiple races: "daily double," winners in two consecutive winners; "daily triple," winners in three consecutive races, and "Pick 6," winners in six consecutive races. Win the last one and you can bribe Donald Trump to dance like a monkey at you son's bar mitzvah--and send the boy off to Harvard for four years.
